And yes the horses we take are very well trained and about as bomb proof as a horse can get. We have gotten them used to balloons and other things they might encounter at a party. The 2 we use now are full size horses, but if we starting doing this more we have a pony and 3 minis that we will train and despook to start using them.

I really like what you are doing, but I feel so sorry for you. When you find out what insurance costs, it will knock you over. Too bad how things are going in this world nowadays.

Here is something you might look into: When you have a business, you open yourself up to all kinds of liability. But as a employee, the employer takes on the liability. Perhaps if you and your horses worked by the hour, you could avoid liability insurance???… IDK, but sure would like to see you keep going!

First you would do your research – how many pony party businesses in your area? Contacting them & ask questions from a prospective client’s point of view, you should get honest answers. Think of good reasons to be asking some of your questions ie which insurance do you use? Or do they send you a waiver form before the day of the booking? Of course you are going to ask them the costs, variations of their service. Ask questions and just let them talk. Speak to lots of pony party businesses.

Regarding starting a small business, there must be local government departments that provide information and support for small businesses. Going into a partnership is always risky, no matter what the relationship between the partners. Who is your target market and where do they go to if they want to find a pony party business? (I’m in Australia – not familiar with available publications etc at your end). Don’t spend too much money at first till you get yourselves more established. Think of some ingenious and free ways to promote your business. Always answer your phones professionally using your business name & have an excellent phone manner. Aim to be great at customer service. Just with that you’ll be streets ahead of a lot of your competitors.

Then if you are wanting to stand out from your competitiors, offer your service differently from other pony party businesses. When I started 12 years ago, I didn’t want to do just pony rides as there were plenty of other businesses offering that service, but no one was doing ‘pony entertainment’ so I first created a ‘Pony Pantomime Show’ – a 40 min comedy magic show with a performing mini pony. The ‘Groovy Groom and Glamour’ pony party was the 2nd one I put together – a cute interactive party with grooming, braiding mains and tails, pony dress-ups & a ‘fashion parade’. People loved the originality of it. I developed the business in stages as the business grew.
